Naturally, the best coconut water in the world comes straight from the fresh fruit. But if you want to drink coconut water at home, you should be as close to nature as at all possible.Dr Antonio Martins started this big idea in 2002. He created several coconut juice and coconut water products that are unique in their quality. One of these is aqua verde, which is made from coconut water concentrate just as orange juice is made from orange juice concentrate.

Part of the water is extracted from the coconut water from green coconuts using heat treatment and reverse osmosis. As a result, we only have to transport 1/12 of the juice across the oceans rather than the juice with all its water content. This is good for the climate, as this reduces the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the environment. Not least, this is also good for your pocket as this approach is way more cost-effective.

aqua verde uses a sophisticated system with cold aseptic, i.e. sterile bottling. Just try out some other coconut water brands. You will quickly taste the difference.

As advertising often uses fictional doctors, we would like to tell you who our Dr Martins actually is. He does actually exist ...

The story of coconut water is closely linked to the life of Dr Antonio Martins. He was born in 1955 in Goiania, Brazil, so he grew up with coconut water. From an early age, he became aware of the many beneficial properties of young coconut water as a natural thirst-quencher. He later worked in many countries around the world as an internationally renowned specialist in sports medicine, nutritional medicine and paediatrics. In 1981, he moved to Austria. At his practice in Vienna, mothers frequently came to him with the question: "What is the best drink for our child?"

Dr Antonio Martins’ answer was coconut water. The problem was, coconut water was not available in Europe because coconut palms do not grow here.

Dr Antonio Martins could simply not leave it at that. It had to be possible to bring coconut water to Europe as a drink. But not just any kind. Only the best quality would do. Produced as an organic product, as sustainably as possible. This was actually a very simple idea, but very difficult to achieve …

He spent many years looking for smallholders, certifying coconut plantations as organic and developing a process that gets the delicate coconut water from the fresh, young coconut into bottles and packaging in such a way that it retains both its value and its flavour. This was not easy as he wanted the coconut juice from young coconuts to be processed as little as possible and free of preservatives and other chemicals.

In 2002, he finally achieved his goal. This is when Dr Antonio Martins’ coco was launched. In 2014, he added aqua verde from green coconuts.

Coconut water is a very sensitive natural product. The best way to drink it is of course fresh and straight from the young coconut. As coconut palms do not grow in our latitudes, however, Dr Antonio Martins spent a long time working out how to bottle and transport coconut water in a quality that comes as close as possible to the natural product. It was always a matter of achieving the best quality and preserving as much as possible of the vital substances of the fresh coconut over a long period of time.

aqua verde is juice from fruit juice concentrate, therefore completely free from preservatives and chemicals. We do not use any other problematic preservation techniques, which often negatively alter the flavour and nutrient composition of other coconut water products. What we do is unique and it is the reason for the special quality and the natural taste of our coconut water.

Open the coconut – extract the juice. This sounds easy but requires a lot of experience - which is particularly true of organic produce - as our objective is for every aqua verde product to come as close as possible to a fresh coconut on a sandy tropical beach. Next comes the concentration process, in which part of the water is extracted from the coconut water from green coconuts using heat treatment and reverse osmosis. As a result, we only have to transport 1/12 of the juice across the oceans rather than the juice with all its water content. This is good for the climate, as this reduces the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the environment. Not least, this is also good for your pocket as this approach is way more cost-effective.

The coconut water concentrate is immediately deep frozen and sent by ship to Europe.
The bottling itself then takes place in Germany in a closely coordinated cold aseptic process. As a result, aqua verde coconut water is hardly distinguishable from a fresh coconut.

This is also why you should be very careful when deciding which coconut water you should buy. Products that are not made in the EU often contain preservatives (this tends to be particularly the case for coconut water sold in cans) While heating coconut water to high temperatures extends its shelf life - quickly and cheaply – this changes the quality and taste of the coconut water.
